In the Shadow of Lincoln: Gomer Pyle USMC-“The Impossible Dream”

Gomer Pyle-USMC aired on CBS from September 25, 1964, to May 2, 1969. The series was a spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show, and the show ran for a total of 150 half-hour episodes spanning over five seasons.

It starred Jim Nabors (6/12/June 12, 1930 – November 30, 2017) as Private First Class Gomer Pyle, and Frank Sutton (October 23, 1923 – June 28, 1974) as Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter.

Jim Nabors was born and raised in Sylacauga, Alabama, and graduated from the University of Alabama. After graduating, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a typist for the United Nations. He would move to southern California because of his asthma, and was discovered by Andy Griffith while working at a Santa Monica nightclub.

Frank Sutton, from Clarksville, Tennessee, enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the South Pacific, taking part in 14 assault landings. Sutton was a sergeant who served from 1943–1946 in the 293rd Joint Assault Signal Company. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Interestingly, he had been medically rejected by the Marine Corps.

Of course, no writing would be complete without the mention of the voice of Jim Nabors, who would go on to record some 28 albums with that amazing baritone singing voice.
We share this performance of Jim Nabors singing the classic “”The Impossible Dream,” on stage in Washington, D.C., with the United States Marine Band. This episode, entitled “The Show Must Go On,” first aired on CBS on November 3, 1967.
The song was originally composed by Mitch Leigh, with lyrics written by Joe Darion.

Looking Way, Way Back: Quiz on 60’s TV Shows

Hi Friends:

OK … so I have been working on a slide-show for the New Year to share, but … does this sound familiar? … I’ve been so busy, so “caught up” with the present, with “what’s going on” now … I haven’t had as much time, as I’d like, to think about the past (year) … or, the future …

Sound familiar?

Speaking of “sounding familiar” … recently, while I was doing research for a recent post, I came across this video, which features the theme songs of popular television shows from the 1960’s. They play the opening of a television theme song, and, for 15 seconds, they play the theme … they then reveal the name of the television show.

I just finished watching the video again (for the first time since I had originally downloaded it), and was amazed that I got the same answers wrong now, as I got the first time I played this.

It also amazed me, and I mean really amazed me, how many great television shows there were, in the 1960’s. I feel comfortable using the word “great” here. They were great. I still enjoy many of these shows again, thanks to cable television.

Except for sports, I don’t watch network television at all.

Yet … many of these shows, from the 60’s, are still part of my life, via re-runs.
I’m glad they are. Many of them are that good, and “that good” just doesn’t “run out.”

It would be easy to use this opportunity to “knock” the current television shows, but that’s not the point. Let’s face it: Television reflects “the times.” Look at those shows from the 60’s. Look at the television shows now. Get it? Television reflects “the times.”

As I look ahead to the New Year, and look back at the last year, I still realize that, at the top of any list, I just need to be more thankful for what I have. What I have right now. What God has already blessed me with.

Yeah, yeah, television has changed.
Yeah, yeah, the times have changed …
Maybe what has really changed is me.

If I can change … then … and, only then … I can change the world around me. Change my world. I saw this on a shower curtain once (yes, a shower curtain):
“When a man is right, his world is right.”

Please enjoy this video quiz, and be amazed, not just at how many of these shows you
remember, but at how many “great” shows there were …

Oak Ridge Boys sing “Amazing Grace” at President George H.W. Bush’s Funeral

After playing their records for several years, I finally got the opportunity, a few years ago, to see “The Oak Ridge Boys” in concert.
It was one of the most memorable, and enjoyable concerts I’ve ever experienced.
I would honestly say that, “I’d see them again tomorrow.”

They are as busy as ever: Their new Gospel Album, “17th Avenue Revival,” comes out in March. They still tour year-round, and are currently traveling on their 29th annual holiday concert tour, “Shine the Light on Christmas,” which is taking the group to 32 cities in 18 states.

This latest holiday tour began on November 14th, in Branson, Missouri.

They would interrupt the tour for a very personal performance:
From their website, https://oakridgeboys.com, they explain:

DEC 1, 2018
The Oak Ridge Boys Remember President George H.W. Bush
“… he was fortunate enough to have been married to one of the most wonderful women who ever walked this planet … We started to sing for him … when he was VP, and we have been singing for him ever since. We have performed our songs on Air Force One, in Kennebunkport many times, and at his home in Houston … at the White House and several of his key birthday celebrations … we would even call him and sing to him when he wasn’t feeling well and Barbara swore that we had a healing effect on our FRIEND. We have laughed together, shared tears together, fished together, hiked together, shared a lot of lobster together, and sang together. We WILL sing for him again one day. THIS is ASSURED!
Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, Richard Sterban, Joe Bonsall
The Oak Ridge Boys

In addition, Duane Allen wrote this:
“He was like a daddy figure to me, and he was all about making everyone around him have a good time. The sting of death always hurts, but I have so many memories to make me smile. The Oak Ridge Boys have sung “Amazing Grace” for him on Air Force One, in Kennebunkport, at the White House, and over the phone when he was in the hospital. However, singing “Amazing Grace” at his funeral will be the most difficult assignment we will ever have.”

Senator John F Kennedy on Jack Paar Show: June 16, 1960

On June 16, 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy made history by being the first presidential candidate to appear on a late-night television program.

We must remember the times.
In the year 1960, a political candidate making an appearance on a late-night entertainment show was something which had not been done … because, in many circles, such an appearance would be frowned upon.

For example, as Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, “By the standards of 1960, a Presidential candidate’s appearance on an entertainment program was considered a bit shocking.”

John F. Kennedy would become known as the first “TV President.”

We have only a short clip from the show, but it is amazing how the statements Senator Kennedy made, resonate so clearly with our times, with our world, today.

His response to questions regarding why he went into politics, the responsibility of the United States in world affairs, the responsibility of the office of President, the issue of enemy countries sending “fellow travelers” into the United States, and how important it is for the United States to set an example which citizens of other countries would want to follow.
Senator Kennedy stated that “in the final analyses, they have to believe in freedom themselves. I don’t think you can sell freedom … In the long run, the best asset we have is the desire of people to be free.”

In other words, you can’t “inject” democracy.

For the record, this was 58 years ago.
Yes … 58 years ago.

Robert F Kennedy on Jack Parr Show: March 13, 1964

It was the first public appearance of Robert F. Kennedy, after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

This year, Thanksgiving was on November 22.
Like many of you, Thanksgiving is a special day for me. In fact, the entire weekend (for me … 4 days!!!) is something I look forward to, all year.

This year, it seemed that I paid more attention to “November 22” than to “Thanksgiving.”

It may be because, for the past few months, I have been researching the history of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. I have read much, and watched many documentaries and films on their lives, and their families’ lives and history. As I’ve read, and viewed, the one thing that strikes me the most, personally, is how close “John and Bobby” were. That is the one thing I have “taken away” from my studies. I just completed a Library display entitled “A Brother’s Trust,” which I will share in the future.

On March 13, 1964, it was exactly 16 weeks after November 22, 1963.
In his introduction of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, Jack Paar stated, “ … A man whose own life reminds us of what brother really means …”

Many of you may remember that Senator John F. Kennedy, as a presidential candidate, had appeared on “The Jack Parr Show” on June 16, 1960.

I think that, even though I didn’t know them personally, I feel a personal connection. Because … I have brothers, too. While I don’t exactly remember President Kennedy, I remember the times that followed. I remember, very well, Robert Kennedy. I remember “the times which followed” both. I remember well enough to ponder, in a deeply emotional way, “what might have been.”

Using Isaiah 54:17 to “Beat the Devil:” Part Three: The Explanation

Hi Friends:

So … Now … how do you tie in the new Game Show “Snoop Dogg Presents The Jokers Wild” with Isiah 54:17?

… Yes … that “Snoop Dogg.”

Yes … that verse …

Here goes:

We were watching a movie, on the TBS Channel. Sprinkled liberally (I think that’s the first time I’ve ever written that phrase), throughout the multitude of commercial breaks, were the promos for a new version of “The Jokers Wild” game show.

When I was a kid, “The Jokers Wild” was one of my favorite game shows. I remember that, not only did I like the old show, but I always did really well on answering the questions.

However … the official title of this new show was “Snoop Dogg Presents The Jokers Wild.”

Yes … that Snoop Dogg.

Should I watch it?
Can I watch it?
Should I watch it?

Yes, I had to “talk myself” into watching it.
I’m being honest.
I didn’t know what to expect.

There were only two factors which drove me to watch the show:
One, I was a big fan of the original.
Two, Carol and I enjoy “parodies” or “spoofs” of shows, or people, etc. This is strictly an enjoyment of comedy. One of our favorite (and I won’t mention which one) “spoofs” is a parody of a game show (not “Jokers Wild”). This particular parody is very funny, has great lines and it features great impressions.

I didn’t know what to expect.
I know … some may say … “What did you think would happen?”
But, honestly, I didn’t know what to expect.

My intentions, I felt, were pure.
So, I watched the first episode.
The second season had already started, but we had the “On Demand” feature, which allows you to watch previous episodes.

I must note this is not a review.
This is just what happened.

I watched the first show.

I know they allow curse-words on network television (one of the reasons we don’t watch network television), but I didn’t think the TBS show would be “worse.”

I have never seen a game show where the host was allowed to curse.
I’m not making this up …
I had just never seen that …
He walked out, at the introduction of the second or third show (I can’t remember which), holding what was obviously a mixed drink in his hand …
I’m not making this up …
I had just never seen that …

In effect, the show is, literally a “tour-de-force” of Snoop Dogg.
Almost every category has a “Snoop Dogg” reference.

I can’t believe I’m explaining this …

For those of you who don’t know, the show is, in its set-up, faithful to the original. Yes … I used the word “faithful.”
The “Game” Board is set up like a big slot machine …
Even the host’s description of the game board uses a curse work in its description …
I’m not making this up …

I can’t believe I’m explaining this …

There’s a big slot machine … each contestant has a “handle” which they pull, like a slot machine, which then makes the board spin like a slot machine … instead of fruit, or carrots, or numbers, categories come up, just like when you pull the handle of a slot machine …
You get the idea … the contestant then answers questions based upon the categories which “spin out.”If two or more categories … or “the joker” appears … this increases the amount of money the question is worth …

This is done in front of a live audience … which goes berserk at every opportunity …

Ever notice how difficult it is to explain how a game show operates?
I can’t believe I’m explaining this …

Anyway … by answering the questions, your score increases.
The contestant with the most money wins … and, gets the chance to “spin the wheel” for 25,000.00 cash!!!
Wait … no, it’s not a wheel … but, spin the slot machine for the “big prize.”
Instead of categories, money amounts come up … three amounts (like categories) of money come up with each spin …
What you win, with each spin, is added together, and, you can stop … don’t spin again, and keep what you’ve won … or … you can spin again … However … if “The Devil” comes up in the spin … you lose all your money … Game Over …

So … if you can “Beat the Devil” (meaning “the Devil” does not appear in your spin) … you get the grand prize of 25,000.00!!!!
25,000!!!
But … You must “beat the devil” in order to win …

There has got to be a lesson there …
I can’t believe I’m explaining this …

Anyway … this was the first show … Episode One … Season One …
I watched it …

The contestant who made it to the “Final Round,’ where she spins the handle (still don’t know what they call that) for 25,000 … steps up to the handle to spin …
But … before she does … as she grabs the handle to spin …
As both hands are gripped tightly on the handle, to spin … her head bowed down … she makes this statement:
“No weapon formed against me shall prosper …”

Yes … as I watched … she bowed her head … and I saw it …
I heard it …
“No weapon formed against me shall prosper …”

I saw it … I heard it …
So did Snoop Dogg …
So did Snoop Dogg …

I nearly stood up in my chair!
I had never seen that!
I had never heard that!
Before the contestant pulled the handle … before she spinned …
She quoted Isiah 54:17.
She said … and, wait ‘till you read this …
She said … “In front of God and everybody …”
Including Snoop Dogg …
She quoted Isiah 54:17 …

I literally stood up in my chair.
Snoop Dogg?
He yelled, “Speak it, Sister!!!”
Yes, he did.
Yes, he yelled … “Speak it, Sister …!!!
I saw it.
I heard it.

Please note this:
I have wanted, for weeks now, to go back and watch that episode, to make sure I “had it right,” especially Snoop Dogg’s response. For I was sure (it is forever ingrained in my mind) what she said …
I wanted to see, again … his response …
It was either “Speak it!” or “Preach it!”
I’m ok with either.
What I can’t do … is watch the show again … I’ve tried to make time, but I can’t …

Oh … How did she do?
She won the 25,000.00.
Yes, she won the 25,000.00.
This was the first episode … the first season …

Yes … in the context of the game, she “beat the devil.”

This made an indelible impression on me.
For, I had never seen this.
I had never heard this.

She won.
I don’t care if it was a game show or not … it made a huge impression on me.
A huge impression.

Keep in mind I pray and study God’s Word every day.
I certainly hope you do, too.

Yes … are you ready for this?
Yes … I thought back to how Jesus beat the devil, when He was tempted in the wilderness.
How?
By speaking God’s Word.

I’m just saying …

In closing, I’ll add:
I had to … I had to … watch another couple of episodes of the show … just to see …
The next contestant did not win the “big money.”

But … there is something else I remember from either the second or third episode (that’s all I watched):
At the championship round, on one of the shows, after the contestant had lost … in other words, they had been “beaten by the devil” (in the shows language) … Snoop Dogg … always on the contestant’s side …
exclaimed … and, I mean, he repeatedly exclaimed … as the “Devil” had come up … Snoop Dogg …

In front of God and everybody … Exclaimed … repeatedly cried out:
“He’s a liar!!!”
“He’s a liar!!!”
“He’s a liar!!!”

I saw it.
I heard it.

I haven’t watched the show since.
I can’t.
Even to get an exact quote … I can’t watch it again.
I can’t.
I shouldn’t.

But … when the contestant, in that first episode, bowed her head and said,
“No weapon formed against me shall prosper …”

That made a huge impression on me.
I won’t forget it.

By the way, this series led to a large amount of research … including learning about the life of Snoop Dogg.
Allow me to share this with you:
When he was very young, he began singing and playing piano at Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church in Long Beach, California.
In 2018, he released his first gospel album, “Bible of Love.”

God will use every means necessary to reach us.
Any means necessary.
Especially to those who have been exposed to the truth.
Any means necessary.

Just so we can read it again, here’s the full verse:
“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.”
Isaiah 54:17

So, really …

When was the last time you heard someone speak this verse?
When was the last time you spoke this verse?

Blessings to you, and your family,

Richard. Vincent. Rose.

Using Isaiah 54:17 to “Beat the Devil:” Part Two

Hi Friends:
We are still trying to get to the explanation of the title.

It was while watching a movie on the TBS On-Demand channel that I saw the promos for a new version of “The Jokers Wild” game show.
This used to be … “way-back-when” … one of my favorite game shows. I have always liked shows which feature “question and answers” to test your knowledge.

So, I started researching the history of “The Jokers Wild” game show.
As I progressed, I ran into a lot of “I Remember” moments.
Enough of those moments to add this installment of what will be a three-part series, into our “I Remember” category.

Perhaps, when we hear of a game show which tests your knowledge, we first think of “Jeopardy!”
I remember the original “Jeopardy!” hosted by Art Fleming. The original daytime version debuted on NBC on March 30, 1964. Don Pardo was the announcer until 1975, and John Harlan announced for the 1978–1979 show.
I used to love Art Fleming coming out, raising his arm, and saying, “Thank you, John Harlan!!!” or “Thank you, Don Pardo!!!” as he walked to the podium. Art Fleming just seemed to be a nice man. As a fan of old-time radio, and, I guess now, old-time television, it was always important who the announcer was. I remember when the announcer was a big part of the show in those early years of television.
The daily syndicated version, the “current version,” has featured Alex Trebek as host and Johnny Gilbert as announcer since 1984.
1984?
Alex Trebek has hosted “Jeopardy!” since 1984?
That’s 34 years.
34 years.

There is an old saying in the radio business that, “You know you’re getting older when they start making “re-makes” of songs that you used to play when they were brand new.”
I guess now, the same can be said for game shows.

“Jeopardy!” is one of those shows that, when you walk in the room where the show is on … you have stop, and try to answer at least one question … or, more. It just “grabs you” and, certainly that is one of the secrets behind its appeal. Just like “The Wheel of Fortune,” when the game is on when you walk in the room, you just have to stop for a moment, and try to solve the puzzle.
While I was never a fan of “Wheel of Fortune,” I used to love “Jeopardy!”
Have you noticed that “Jeopardy!” is always spelled with an exclamation point?

Anyway, I remember, when I was a child, that Mama used to love to watch “Jeopardy!” So, I loved it, too.
I remember … “Jeopardy!” was on at 10:00 …Right after “The Phil Donahue Show,” which Mama also would sometimes watch.
I can still remember certain episodes of “The Phil Donahue Show” with Billy Graham as guest.

Oh, boy … do I remember “The Jack LaLanne Show” … That would have to be one of my earliest television memories …
One man, and one chair … His fitness show ran from 1953 until 1985.

Both my Mom and Dad used to watch his program. I remember that much of Jack LaLanne’s audience were stay-at-home mothers. His wife, Elaine LaLanne, was part of the show to demonstrate the exercises, as well as demonstrate the fact that doing the exercises would not ruin their figures or musculature.
Remember this?
Jack LaLanne also included his dog Happy as a way to attract children to the show. Later, another dog named Walter was used, with LaLanne claiming “Walter” stood for “We All Love To Exercise Regularly.”

Which leads me to remember … Charles Atlas …
I remember Daddy was a big fan of Charles Atlas, and I can remember, every morning, Daddy doing exercises made famous by Charles Atlas.
Of course, I was a big fan of Charles Atlas.
I think every American boy was.
Yes … I remember those “kick sand in the face” ads on the back of comic books and magazines.
And … yes … I remember ordering the “Charles Atlas Course,” as well.

Daddy always … always … watched the world news at 6:30.
Didn’t matter if we were in the middle of supper or not …
He would grab his plate, and go into the living room, sit on the couch, and watch the news.
Always.
I remember Chet Huntley and David Brinkley.
I remember Walter Cronkite.
I remember, on Saturday nights … Roger Mudd hosting the Saturday Evening News on CBS.
We always watched that …
Wrestling was on, from Chattanooga, at 5:00, so the news would follow at 6:00.
I remember … when we got one of our first hogs/pigs, Daddy named it “Roger Mudd.”

I remember … after the news … if we were lucky … we’d get to watch “Truth or Consequences” with Bob Barker, and then … if we got to watch that … we could watch “Dragnet.”
I remember … that, sometimes, we would watch “To Tell the Truth” with Gary Moore hosting.
That was usually the only hour of TV we got …
Except on Thursday night … when “The Waltons” were on.
On Friday nights … we got a bonus:
We were able to watch “Sanford and Son.”
I remember “Chico and the Man,” which would follow.

We were all awake, watching Walter Cronkite, when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.

Anyway … back to the game shows …

I was a fan of “The Jokers Wild” years ago.
I remember that I always did well on getting the answers correct.
I don’t get to watch “Jeopardy!” anymore, and I have no real interest in “game shows,” but I still love anything that carries a “question and answer” theme.
For example, when writing Part One of this series, I needed to check spelling and correct definition of a word. I use the Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary and Thesaurus.
Of course … before I left their website … I had to take at least one quiz … I did pretty well on it …
So, the point is, I still like quizzes, and the like, which test knowledge.

So, I thought I’d check out the new “Jokers Wild” television show. As written, I was a big fan of the show, many years ago.
When it first aired, the show was billed as
“The game where knowledge is king and lady luck is queen.”

By the way, Jack LaLanne would say that
“Exercise is king and nutrition is queen.”

As I researched the history of the show, it read like a “who’s who” of game shows.
“The Jokers Wild” first aired on CBS from 1972 to 1975, and from 1977 to 1986 in syndication. A children’s version, titled “Joker! Joker!! Joker!!!” aired from 1979 to 1981, and
a revival of the series aired in 1990 and 1991. The creator of the show, Jack Barry, hosted the show from 1972 to 1984, and is the host I have always associated with “Jokers Wild.”

In my research, I discovered this:
Jack Barry was not the original choice to host the show.
Allen Ludden hosted the first two pilot episodes for CBS.
Tom Kennedy, Wink Martindale, and Allen Ludden were the three top choices to host, but each was already committed to other shows. Kennedy was tied to “Split Second” for ABC, Ludden had just started hosting a revival of “Password,” and Martindale was to host “Gambit.”
They offered the hosting job to Dennis James, who had originally been the favorite to land the host job for the upcoming Mark Goodson–Bill Todman Productions’ game show “The New Price Is Right.” When CBS agreed to a weekday daytime version of “The New Price Is Right,” Vice President of Daytime Programming B. Donald “Bud” Grant wanted 15-year “Truth or Consequences” host Bob Barker to host “The New Price is Right” instead of Dennis James. Bob Barker originally said he would gladly host “Jokers Wild,” but Grant convinced him to take the hosting role on “The New Price Is Right” instead, which, as you know, Bob Barker would then host for 35 years. Meanwhile, Dennis James was hired by Goodson to host a night-time syndicated version of “The New Price Is Right.”

By the way … I remember … “Password” with Allen Luden.
Remember how popular this show was?

“The Joker’s Wild,” with host Jack Barry, debuted on CBS, on September 4, 1972, on the same Labor Day as “The New Price Is Right,” as well as “Gambit.” It ran until June 13, 1975, airing at 10:00 AM.

That’s enough for now …
Next time … I promise … to fully explain the title of this series …

As our thoughts … and our pens … turn to …
“Snoop Dogg Presents The Jokers Wild.”
Yes … “that” Snoop Dogg.”

Blessings to you, and your family,
Richard. Vincent. Rose.

The Statler Brothers: “The Class of ’57”

Hi Friends:

With this song, the Statler Brothers were awarded the 1972 Grammy Award for “Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.”

Released in August, 1972, “The Class of ’57” was written by Don Reid and Harold Reid, and was the first single from the album “Country Music Then and Now.”

The Statler Brothers are:
Harold Reid, Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune and Don Reid.

The group retired from concerts and tours in 2002.

Here are the words:

The Class of ‘57
(Don Reid / Harold Reid)

Tommy’s selling used cars
Nancy’s fixing hair
Harvey runs a grocery store
And Margaret doesn’t care
Jerry drives a truck for Sears
And Charlotte’s on the make
Paul sells life insurance and part time real estate
Helen is a hostess
Frank works at the mill
Janet teaches grade school, and probably always will
Bob works for the city
And Jack’s in lab research
Peggy plays organ at the Presbyterian Church

And the class of ’57 had its dreams
We all thought we’d change the world with our great works & deeds
Or maybe we just thought the world would change to fit our needs
The class of ’57 had its dreams

Betty runs a trailer park
Jan sells Tupperware
Randy’s on an insane ward
And Mary’s on welfare
Charlie took a job at Ford
Joe took Freddie’s wife
Charlotte took a millionaire
And Freddie took his life
Johnny’s big in cattle
Ray is deep in debt
Where Mavis finally wound up is anybody’s bet
Linda married Sonny
Brenda married me
And the class of all of us is just part of history

And the class of ’57 had its dreams
But living life day-to-day
Is never like it seems
Things get complicated when you get past eighteen
But the class of ’57 had its dreams

The class of ’57 had its dreams
We all thought we’d change the world with our great work & deeds.
Or maybe we just thought the world would change to fit our needs.
The class of ’57 had its dreams.

Graduation: Three in Six Days: Introduction to “Class of ’57”

Hi Friends:

This started as a short introduction to the Statler Brothers’ song, written by Don Reid and Harold Reid, “The Class of ’57.”
I hadn’t planned on writing much … but here we go …

This will serve as an introduction to the video, which we’ll feature next time …

Somehow, I feel comfort when I think that I wasn’t even born in 1957, but the words from this popular Statler Brothers song continue to ring true today:

“We all thought we’d change the world
With our great works & deeds
Or maybe we just thought the world
Would change to fit our needs
The class of ’57 had its dreams”

I’ve been a “ticketed” guest at 3 different High School Graduation ceremonies in one week, at 3 separate, very different venues. 3 in 6 days. That’s one every two days.
I’ve witnessed speeches, marches, and the look of fear, anticipation, gratitude, joy, and excitement, with tassels being turned, and caps thrown into the air.

I’ve seen the pride and joy, that look of accomplishment, of a student who would be the first in their family to graduate High School.
I’ve also looked into the eyes of a student who had just been told that they would not be graduating …
The first place they came was to the Library …

I’ll never forget last Friday, when a group of graduates, as they saw me arrive, began shouting my name, running up as a group to hug me … It was exactly the same scene I had, a few years ago, when I walked into a local McDonald’s, and as I walked from the side entrance, through the restaurant, to the front counter, I passed a group of tables … where a group of my students (now, this was K-2), having “lunch at Summer camp,” saw me, and … there is no better word to describe it … they mobbed me … screaming my name as they ran up, surrounded me, and, literally, “jumped on me” …
You just don’t forget those moments.

By the way … and, all teachers know this:
When you teach K-2, and you see a student at Wal-Mart, they mob you.
When you teach High School, and you see a student at Wal-Mart … they ignore you … like they’ve never seen you before …

This past Monday, in another city, a pretty long drive, I was there to witness the Graduation of a student who had worked for me in the Library at the High School … first, as an internship, then, on a volunteer basis … The traffic in town was incredible, and I finally found a place to park. The only chairs available were at the back of the assembly, which was great, because, the Graduates entered the large hall from the back entrance, just behind me. As they slowly, step-by step, made their way up the aisle, I was turned around to see each Graduate as they “entered” the Main Hall area … I will never forget the look on this young man’s face, as he entered the “staging area” directly behind me … As he stepped into view … He saw me there on the back row … I’ll just never … ever … forget the huge smile that erupted from his face, as he realized I was there …

This young man had made a special trip to our High School, a couple of months before, to present me with the “ticket” to attend the ceremony … I, nor he, had any idea that he would be presented/awarded with an award at Graduation, that is the highest honor a Graduate could receive … in honor of Public Service … His Mother was a featured guest speaker at the Ceremony … His “sash” had the “USAF” banner … I was so proud of him … The photos of me and him, as he displayed his “Raymond Burton” Award, in full “cap and gown,” with the “USAF” sash draped across his shoulders, was one of the proudest moments of my life … eclipsed only by the opportunity to take several photos of him and his Mother … with her camera! I’ll just never forget that …

Then, on Friday, our High School had our Graduation ceremony.
More memories:
The young lady who sang the National Anthem, and whom I have written about in a previous post (I’m so proud of her!), practiced the Anthem … just outside the Library door … that is one picture I’ll always treasure …

I was able to fulfill a promise to another young man who had interned … and then volunteered … to help me in the Library this year. He is a proud member of the United States National Guard, and I had promised, if he would stop by, before Graduation, to take pictures of him (and us together) in his “Dress Blues,” which he proudly wore underneath his Graduation robe. He had just received his “PFC” ranking, and with his Insignia Pin, Award Medal, and sash proudly displaying “National Guard,” we were able to take his picture … and … which meant so much … “our” picture, in the Library …

I saw so many students … maybe, let’s be honest … I may have been seeing for the last time … who have helped me, on a volunteer basis, in the Library.
So many who just loved to stop by and visit …
So many … many students … maybe, let’s be honest … I may have been seeing for the last time …

It’s not that I may have meant much to them … that I may have influenced and affected their lives …
It’s how profoundly they have influenced and affected my life.
That they did … and do … mean so much to me.

As I saw the “caps and gowns” of some I have known since they were just “kids,”
I didn’t feel any older.
I felt prouder.

But living life day-to-day
Is never like it seems
Things get complicated when you get past eighteen
But the class of ’57 had its dreams”

From 1965: “If I Were the Devil” by Paul Harvey

Hi Friends:

… Chills …
There are no words adequate to introduce this recording of Paul Harvey from 53 Years Ago.
There just aren’t words.
… Chills …

His voice among the most recognizable in American History, Paul Harvey (September 4, 1918 – February 28, 2009) broadcast his “News and Comment” on weekday mornings and mid-days, and at noon on Saturdays, as well as his famous “The Rest of the Story” features.

From 1952 through 2008, Harvey’s programs reached as many as 24 million people a week. “Paul Harvey News” was carried on 1,200 radio stations, 400 American Forces Network stations, and 300 newspapers.

In his lifetime, he received 11 Freedom Foundation Awards, as well as the Horatio Alger Award. In 2005, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ most prestigious civilian award.

When I think of Paul Harvey, I remember
“Hello Americans,”
“Page Two …” (and Three and Four)
“From Chicago”
“Good Day!”
“Our For What it’s Worth Department”
“Among Today’s Sue-eerrss…”
“”He would not want us to mention his name … “
“Here’s a strange …”
“And now, you know … the rest of the story …”
On his 12:30 (Mid-day) show, he would always have the couple’s names who were celebrating the “most years together” anniversary.

I can’t think of Paul Harvey without thinking of his beloved wife, Angel.

And, now, I won’t think of Paul Harvey without thinking of this … stunning … chilling …
recording, made 53 years ago.
